Blepharoplasty

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a procedure to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from below your eye or above your eyelid.

You might consider blepharoplasty if the sagging skin around your eyes gives you a tired, fatigued appearance. Blepharoplasty is also an effective treatment for sagging skin that interferes with your vision.

Dr. Sokoya performs a detailed and personalized consultation to evaluate your candidacy for blepharoplasty. He might first suggest Botox® injections to address minor sagging in the skin around your eyes.

If you have a lot of excess tissue or fat, Dr. Sokoya can recommend either an upper and/or lower blepharoplasty depending on your unique needs, age, and facial structure.

What happens during blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, and you’ll receive general anesthesia to keep you relaxed and comfortable.

Dr. Sokoya determines the best approach to your surgery depending on your specific needs. He focuses on making incisions in the natural creases of your eyelids to minimize your risk for scarring.

In some cases, he can make an external incision just below your lower lash line to remove excess skin and fat. Dr. Sokoya can also make a transconjunctival incision on the inside of your lower eyelid.

In addition to removing excess tissue, Dr. Sokoya can redistribute existing fat around your eyes to enhance the aesthetic appearance of your eyes.

How long does it take to recover from blepharoplasty?

Immediately after your blepharoplasty is complete, you can expect to spend some time in recovery before you can go home to rest. Dr. Sokoya provides you with a detailed printout of postoperative instructions to help you heal fully and without complications.

It’s normal to have slight swelling and bruising around your eyes that goes away within a few days. It can take about two weeks before you can see the full benefit of your surgery.

The stitches Dr. Sokoya uses to close your incisions are dissolvable and will disappear about one week after surgery. You can expect to get back to your usual routine and activities within a week of your blepharoplasty.
